Top 5 Key Takeaways for Data and Analytics from CloudWorld 2024

CloudWorld is an event I look forward to every year.  This year the conference was extremely well attended and there was a massive amount of interest in Data, Analytics, and AI (e.g., 9000 people registered for the Oracle Data Intelligence Keynote session!)  Oracle continues to innovate and build out its Data Intelligence Platform – emphasizing both data platform advancements on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) and AI and analytics content enhancements in Fusion Data Intelligence (FDI).

Here are the Top 5 Key Takeaways for Data and Analytics from CloudWorld 2024:

  • Oracle announces Intelligent Data Lake Solution
This will allow companies to more easily leverage both unstructured and structured data, and to centralize their entire data estate in a single data lake to be used for multiple use cases including GenAI, AI and machine learning.  It supports popular open source file formats like Parquet, Delta and Iceberg.   This enables Oracle to better compete with Microsoft Fabric, Snowflake, Databricks, Google Big Query.
  • “GenAI is magical but it is not magic”
This was a quote from Gabby Rubin who runs Oracle Analytics Cloud (OAC) product development. He was helping to set expectations about the difficulty of using GenAI to query structured data warehouses via a natural language chatbot (e.g., how does GenAI know which of the many columns for month to use) nevertheless, right after CloudWorld Oracle announced the availability of AI Assistant for OAC – a GenAI-based chatbot for querying structured data warehouses.
  • Oracle Transactional Business Intelligence (OTBI) Subject Areas available within Fusion Data Intelligence (FDI)
Oracle will make the OTBI Subject Areas from Cloud Fusion Apps available in FDI right next to the regular FDI Subject Areas. This will allow end users to use OTBI for real-time reporting right from the same place that they use FDI for other reporting and analytics.
  • Oracle Wows the Crowd at Gartner Data and Analytics Summit BI ‘Bake Off’
During the Gartner Data and Analytics Summit Gartner gave the same dataset to Oracle, Tableau and Power BI. Then all three vendors did a demo on stage right next to each other. The audience was surveyed after the demo and 2/3 selected Oracle vs Tableau and Power BI.   Several vendors, including Apps Associates, performed this same demo at CloudWorld this year.
  • Register your favorite ETL Tool for use with FDI
Oracle is putting a lot of effort into making it easier to extend the FDI data warehouse to include other data sources. As part of that effort, they have made it possible to register your favorite ETL tool for use with data in FDI.  So, for example, if a company loves Dbt (and many do) they can use Dbt to transform their data in FDI rather than Oracle Data Integrator (ODI).

It was great to reconnect with my colleagues, learn about the latest innovations, and to brainstorm and strategize with the Oracle team about future innovations.

Over the 20 years that Apps has been in business, we’ve committed ourselves to being innovative experts in enterprise technology. Our partnership with Oracle has expanded over the years in ways that benefit our customers and their customers.

As Oracle leans in to their Data and Analytics capabilities with FDI and OAC/ADW, they have identified Apps Associates as one of its ‘Big 7” integrators. We’re ecstatic about this recognition and excited to continue working with Oracle to deliver exceptional solutions to our customers.

Stay in touch with Apps Associates to see how we implement our CloudWorld 2024 learnings.
